Elgin staat van oudsher bekend als de plek in Zuid-Afrika waar appels vandaan komen: er worden intensief appels en peren verbouwd. Sinds enkele decennia heeft men ook ontdekt dat de koele regio uitermate geschikt is voor de productie van druiven en elegante kwaliteitswijnen.  Richard Kershaw is één van de voorvechters van de streek.
